After a long day of wandering the streets of Lisbon, my phone battery was nearly dead, and I needed to charge it. I wasn’t sure where I could do that, so I thought of asking for a charger in a café. That’s how I found myself stepping into Copenhagen Lab Coffee.
Inside, I spotted two strangers working on their laptops and decided to ask if they had a charger I could borrow. To my surprise, they kindly handed me one, and we started chatting.
As it turned out, they were a couple—he was from Stuttgart, Germany, and she was from Kyoto, Japan. Curious about their journey, I asked how they had ended up in this charming city, where it was a pleasant 16°C in January. They told me they both worked remotely for German companies and had chosen Lisbon as their home.
At that moment, I felt a pang of jealousy. Their life sounded like a perfect balance between work and vacation—something I, as a medical student and future doctor, could never truly experience. My profession ties me to Germany, to hospitals, to a rigid structure that doesn’t allow for the freedom of working from anywhere, enjoying an ocean view, and basking in warm, cozy weather.
But don’t get me wrong—I don’t regret choosing medicine. I love it. I love the science behind it, the people I meet, and the endless opportunities that come with being a doctor in Germany. I’m going to help people and save lives, and that’s an incredible path to walk.
Still, moments of doubt and self-reflection are natural. Sometimes, I feel the urge to do something beyond medicine, to build something of my own. That’s why I started this blog and created my website.
Let’s see where this journey takes me.
